From Grave to Green Conference
On the Transformation of Historical Cemeteries
1-2 February 2024
Berliner Stadtmission, Lehrter Straße 68, 10557 BerlinCemeteries are often seen as monofunctional spaces for burials and mourning. They pose a planning challenge within the dynamic urban fabric because they require plans and strategies that are robust enough to remain valid in the long term, even if framework conditions change. Long periods of stability have also turned cemeteries into refuges for flora and fauna. Especially in booming and densely populated cities with high land-use pressure, where the demand for burial places per citizen is decreasing and burial cultures are changing, the cemetery has become a controversial place that is simultaneously a place of emotion, commerce and community.
The Symposium
The Multifunctional Landscapes research group is co-organizing this two-day conference, taking place February 1–2, 2024, when scholars from a wide range of disciplines and practitioners from many different professions will come together at the Berliner Stadtmission to discuss the future of historical cemeteries in German-speaking countries. The conference aims to contribute to a holistic and transdisciplinary reflection in order to further develop cemeteries as a crucial element of sustainable urban landscapes. If interested in attending, please don’t hesitate to contact the Multifunctional Landscapes group for more information. Please note that the conference will be held in German.
