What city life has to do with sustainable fishing

Cities are emblematic of development and prosperity. But urbanisation has a negative impact on the ecological balance, especially underwater in inland waters. With urbanisation, recreational behaviour and our relationship to wildlife are changing, and capture fisheries are also changing from professional to recreational. Fewer and fewer fishermen, but more and more anglers are using the ecosystems, while most fish today are cultivated under breeding conditions in closed systems. Last but not least, the sustainability of fishing on rivers and lakes and our relationship to nature and the environment are under discussion.

Robert Arlinghaus is Professor for Integrative Fisheries Management at the Faculty of Life Sciences in joint professorship with the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB). The discussion will be moderated by THESys Postdoc Dr. Theresa Frommen.
