On September 09, 2024, Ana Buchadas successfully defended her PhD thesis “Understanding deforestation frontiers in the world’s tropical dry woodlands” at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her thesis was supervised by Tobias Kuemmerle and Patrick Meyfroidt. Ana graduated with summa cum laude.

This doctoral research sought to understand the patterns, processes, and consequences of woodland loss in Tropical Dry Woodlands. By identifying and mapping key deforestation frontier types, her study revealed diverse dynamics of frontier expansion and their significant threats to biodiversity. Additionally, the thesis explored the role of conservation in responding to deforestation frontiers, and conceptualized conservation itself as a distinct land use frontier.

In October, Ana Buchadas will start a postdoc position at the Université catholique de Louvain working on the ERC project “Land use implications of the renewable energy transition”.

We congratulate Ana on completing her doctoral thesis and wish her all the best in the future!
