Science-based management and sustainable development of pike populations of coastal lagoons at Rügen (Germany), considering socio-economic, fisheries, ecological and touristic factors

Past Project

The project deals with pike fishing in lagoon ecosystems (“Bodden”) around Rügen in the southern Baltic Sea. Researchers of the Division of Integrative Fisheries Management at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries work hand in hand with anglers and fishers and other cooperating institutions (such as the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries Research) to examine factors influencing the Bodden pike (Esox lucius) population, to analyze migration movements, to identify spawning areas and to quantify the socio-economic and touristic significance of lagoon pike stocks for the region. The project uses a transdisciplinary design and develops solution to transform the fishery towards a sustainable path.
