Doctoral Researcher

Hadjer Smati is a doctoral researcher at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB). Her research integrates human dimensions, environmental psychology and fisheries management with social-ecological system dynamics, specifically examining how recreational anglers and local fishing communities contribute to environmental stewardship, with a particular focus on fish stocking and alternative management practices. Her interdisciplinary work addresses sustainable resource management in marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Hadjer holds a Master’s degree in Applied Economics for the Sea, Environment, and Agriculture from the European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM) at the University of Western Brittany (UBO) and the Agro Rennes-Angers Institute in France (2021–2023). She also earned a State Engineering Degree in Marine Sciences and a Master’s degree in Marine and Continental Hydrobiology, specializing in Marine Biotechnology (2020). Her research focused on creating a marine biotechnology database to guide individuals and organizations interested in the potential of macro-algae for producing phycocolloids and compounds with global applications in human food, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biodiesel, and environmental monitoring.

Before starting her doctoral studies, Hadjer completed a research internship at Wageningen Economic Research in the Netherlands in 2023. During this time, she worked on developing two fisheries management scenarios inspired by Alaska’s approach, aiming to reduce the environmental impacts of North Sea groundfish fisheries by analyzing harvest levels and
