Navigating Climate Overshoot
03 July 2025, 16.15-17.45
Online: on ZoomClimate overshoot, where global temperatures temporarily breach critical thresholds before returning back below in the long run, has surged into focus as global warming approaches 1.5°C. This lecture unpacks why relying on future carbon removal technologies to reverse warming is a risky gamble, as temporary overshoots will have far-reaching consequences for decades to come and could trigger irreversible tipping points. I’ll discuss the international and intergenerational inequity of burdening younger populations with cleanup costs while exposing them to accelerating climate impacts, and the need for an integrated approach to manage near and long-term climate risks.
Carl-Friedrich Schleussner is an Honorary Professor at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Head of Climate Science at Climate Analytics. He has longstanding expertise in climate modelling and climate impact science, multi-year experience in providing scientific advice at the climate-policy interface including the UNFCCC process.
Carl's talk is part of the lecture series “Der grüne Faden” organized by the student-driven Sustainability Office at HU Berlin.
