To support the dialogue between science and society, as well as researchers across different disciplines, IRI THESys holds both external and internal events. This includes lecture series, summer universities and panel discussions open to the public, and participative workshops, colloquiums and activities for IRI THESys. Risk assessment and management of hydrological extremes
29 November 2024, 10.15-11.45
Hybrid: IRI THESys & on ZoomThrough rapidly changing climate, increasing settlement and other global change, risks of droughts and floods have risen dramatically and are expected to increase in the future. The considerable uncertainties associated with these developments require increasingly integrated approaches to risk assessment and management. For example, probabilistic flood loss models are developed with a focus on capturing changes in vulnerability. Model development is based on machine learning approaches like Bayesian Networks and an empirical flood loss database from Germany. I’ll present how data from standardized surveys on flood affected private households and companies is used to gain more knowledge about damage processes and how they can be altered by private precaution and emergency response.
Heidi Kreibich is head of the working group “Flood risk and climate adaptation“ at the Hydrology Section at GFZ Potsdam, and private lecturer at the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
